kichadi/ Arisiyum paruppum

         Dal Kichadi is a comfort food. Arisiyum paruppam is a very popular food in Tirupur, India.When I was a kid and my mom was out of town, one of our neighbors shared this food. This is really nutritious, as toor dhal contain high levels of protein and important amino acids. In India, toor dal is one of the most popular pulses, being an important source of protein in a mostly vegetarian diet. In regions where it grows, fresh young pods are eaten as vegetable in dishes such as sambhar.

 
 Serves up to 2
Ingredients:

1 cup of rice
1/3 cup of toor dal
1 chopped onion
2 1/2 cups of water
1 chopped tomato
2 green chilies(slit lengthwise)
1 tbsp of minced ginger
1/2 tsp of turmeric
1/2 tsp of red chilli powder
1/2 tsp of coriander powder
1 tbsp of ghee
1 tbsp of oil
1 inch of cinnamon
3 cloves
1 tsp of  cumin seeds
10 curry leaves
salt as required

Preparation:

1.In a preheated pan, add oil and ghee. Add cumin, cinnamon and cloves, saute till nice aroma permeates the senses.
2.Add onion, green chillies, ginger and curry leaves. Saute for 3 minutes, now add tomatoes. Saute for another 2 minutes, add  turmeric,red chilli powder, coriander powder and salt.
3. Add rice and toor dal, saute till the moisture disappears. Add water and close the lid. Pressure cook for 2 whistles and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with pickle, chips.
